Test run...

Day 154
8-8-2006
Started: Delavan, KS
Finished: Herington, KS
Today's Miles: 7.0
Total Miles: 2062.0

Today was a bit of a test run for us. Last week when Randy's injury occurred we were seven miles outside of Herington, in the very small town of Delavan. Delavan, Kansas no longer has even a post office due to its diminishing population and the only way we knew we were actually in a new town was by the sign that was posted on the side of the road close to the four houses that made up "downtown". Some of the older farmers that were born and raised and still residing in Delavan built themselves a small building in "downtown" that they call their community center. Because Delavan didn't offer any other facilities, we caught a ride into the town of Herington while Randy rested and recovered from his leg injury. Today we met two local women who were kind enough to give us a ride back to Delavan so we could cover the seven miles into Herington. Unfortunately the miles didn't go as smooth as we were hoping. Initially we were both extremely sore from the days off of doing pretty much nothing but resting, so our muscles were pretty tight. One good thing though, Randy's blisters definitely had time to heal over the past week, so for now, both of his feet are feeling better. But, by the time we made it back into Herington, his injured right leg had swollen back up quite a bit so we applied ice again right away and plan to evaluate things as the night goes on and in the morning again as well. The frustration has certainly taken over all of Randy's facial expressions and Sheri is doing her best to keep his spirits high. We will continue to keep a close eye on Randy's leg and take things one day at a time. Tomorrow we will receive a package in the mail from Randy's sister, Renee, an addition to our gear supply. So we are looking forward to doing a little restructuring and rearranging as we head west in the upcoming days and months. For now, we will continue to rest and look forward to being back on our feet soon.
