WE ARE LOVING THE ADT ON DAY THREE!!!
Day 3 3/9/06 Started: Weaber Residence-Blanchard Rd. Finished: ADT Shelter Tuckahoe State Park Today's Miles: 23.7 Total ADT Miles: 67.7
What a great night sleep. Lee, Chris and Savannah were amazing trail angels. We can't thank them enough for letting us stay in their home. Today we got an earlier start, up at 6 on trail by 7. It was great to see Chris one more time as she passed us on the way to work. She even went back home to see if Sheri left her sunglasses, which we fortunately later found in Sheri's jacket pocket. It was a beautiful day as we walked past Adamsville and Hickman. We had a nice conversation with a gentleman from Adamsville and were greeted by his two cows and dalmation. Not long after we passed the Mason-Dixon line and entered into Maryland - our 2nd state!! We had a nice lucnch at a Subway in Denton (Not bad for trail food). We got many strange looks from other lunch goers until finally a nice woman named Barbara asked us where we were walking to. She wished us luck and passed us a short time later in her car and gave us a honk and a wave. We had a great experience as we walked by Caroline County High School. A student from the cafeteria popped his head out the door, shouted across the street to us, wondering where we were headed. We replied "California!" He said "where?" We said "california!" He said "are you serious?" We said "Yeah!" A second later many students were cheering in the background as he yelled back "Rock on Dude!" We giggled for quite some time. On the way to Ridgely the trail was tough on our feet. Not much of a shoulder to walk on so we were constantly dodging traffic. In "Beautiful Ridgely", as they call it, we met a nice woman named Michelle, a local, who pointed out a friendly market where we could get some water before we walked to Tuckahoe State Park. Michelle came to the market hoping to catch us before we bought water , offering some water from her tap. We had already stocked up, but the thought was super nice. We were not sure if the ADT shelter would have a good water source. As it turns out there is only a nice lake, and with all this farm land there's lots of fertilizer. The shelter area reminds us of a well built shelter on the AT, but also shows us how little it's used in comparison to A.T. shelters, evident from the overgrowth of plant life...we haven't seen another hiker yet? It is quite nice though to be able to set your tent up in the shelter and spread out everywhere. Our feet are barking at us and our sleeping bags are calling. Tomorrow we plan to cross the Chesapeake so tonight we must sleep.
Your friends on the ADT, Sheri and Randy
P.S. The Field Research and Data page for Delaware and the Photographs we have taken up to this point will be updated this weekend!
