Happy Labor Day...

Day 181
9-4-2006
Started: Outside LaJunta, CO
Finished: LaJunta, CO
Today's Miles: 7.0
Total Miles: 2494.0

We decided that since today was Labor Day that we wouldn't work ourselves too hard. We enjoyed a short day today as we played tourists walking through the town of La Junta. La Junta was established in 1881 and was a railroad town from the beginning. La Junta was a transport hub for produce and cattle shipments. It was the main forwarding point for the trade going into New Mexico, Arizona, and the Southwestern United States. It is said that a herd of antelope ran down what passed for Main Street, leading to the presence of the animals on the city seal today. Today the area is given over to ranching and agriculture and is known for some of the finest melon crops in the world. After moseying through La Junta's business district we walked into the KOA where Dad Wiest and Lynn were waiting to have lunch. We decided to call it a day at the KOA and since the "bullet" is parked on trail we will start walking again in the morning from our campsite at the KOA. In an attempt to give us a full day off Dad Wiest and Lynn have written their own journal entry for the day and we are happy to share it with everyone.....

Happy Labor Day!

Today started off with a nice breakfast with Randy and Sheri in the RV. The plan for the day was for us to take Randy and Sheri back to the spot where we picked them up last night. They were going to walk to the KOA campground where we set up camp since Friday and join us for lunch, then they were to continue on to get in their twenty miles for the day. Much to our great surprise, when they arrived at our campsite seven miles after we dropped them off, Randy and Sheri declared they were done for the day. We were thrilled to have the afternoon to spend together. After some lunch and relaxing we all headed over to Wal-Mart to get some things Randy and Sheri needed. This was our third shopping trip to Wal-Mart so we do believe we are stocked up now. Wal-Mart just so happens to be next door to the campground. Later we enjoyed a nice dinner sitting outside enjoying the beautiful weather in LaJunta, Colorado. We are glad we were able to spend this time with them as they were making plans for the rest of their journey, deciding on going south or staying on the ADT. We both love spending any time we can with them, they are very special and we both support them in every way we can on their journey.

Dad Wiest and Lynn

.....We enjoyed a great day in LaJunta today and will continue to make westward progress in the morning.

Your Friends on the ADT,
Randy and Sheri
