Nearly eaten alive...
Day 184 9-7-2006 Started: Outside Pueblo, CO Finished: Near Pueblo, Co Today's Miles: 22.0 Total Miles: 2538.0
There is no doubt that we have been successful this week in putting on a few extra pounds with all of Lynn's delicious cooking. We are hoping that the extra layer of fat will keep us warm in the upcoming cold months that lie ahead of us. Randy spent most of the morning trying to upload pictures to treckusa, so we didn't actually start hiking until late in the afternoon. Well, that really turned out to be not such a great idea. The mosquito population out here in Eastern Colorado is horrific right now and today we were definitely mosquito bait. We tried applying mosquito repellant several times throughout the day, but nothing would deter the pesky insects from sucking the blood out of us. They were so bad all day that it made for really unpleasant walking conditions. If the mosquitoes weren't bad enough by themselves, Randy was once again battling the losing battles with blisters from his new shoes. We basically walked twenty two miles today without a single break because if we stopped we believe we both would have been eaten alive. We have never been so happy to see Dad Wiest and Lynn when they retrieved us from our mosquito misery just as the final minutes of daylight were slipping away. We were very happy to make it back to the campground for the night and while Lynn prepared our last feast of the week, Sheri made a final trip to the Laundromat as Randy uploaded new pictures to treckusa. We stuffed ourselves so silly that all we could stand to do was make our bed and get in it. Dad Wiest and Lynn are heading back to New Jersey tomorrow so the morning hours will be busy with everyone packing. For now, we are enjoying our fat bellies and comfortable sleeping accommodations for one more night. Tomorrow it's back to granola bars for dinner and our thermarests as beds in our tent. This week we have been spoiled hikers!
