Trail Journal : Day 222 10-15-2006 Pine Valley, UT to Beyond Nevada State Line, NV
Posted by Randy and Sheri on 2007/4/1 9:00:00 (274 reads)

Greetings from Nevada...

Day 222
10-15-2006
Started: Pine Valley, UT
Finished: Beyond State Line, NV
Today's Miles: 32.8
Total Miles: 3364.3

The wide open spaces of the Pine Valley provided the most unbelievable star gazing last night. The window of opportunity didn't last long because the clouds that were rolling through yesterday were still slowly clearing out this morning, but in the middle of the night on a trip out of the tent the dark Utah valley gave us a clear shot at the far away cloud known as the Milky Way. If walking amongst such huge valleys and never ending deserts doesn't make you feel small, then looking out at the rest of the universe above the Pine Valley will! Most of the hiking day today was spent making our way through valleys. We hiked out of the Pine Valley and into the Snake Valley and followed the windind Snake Valley all the way to Nevada. So, tonight we are more then excited to be able to say, "Greetings from Nevada and the Pacific Time Zone!" We found a hidden spot in the sagebrush, Nevada's state flower, just a few miles past the state line and we're sure the star gazing under the Nevada sky will be just as incredible. Late in the day we went through the last tiny town in Utah, Garrison Utah. There's only a few houses, a Mormon church and a Utah Department of Transportation facility, so within a mile of walking we had come into and gone out of town. We can see our first Nevada town, Baker Nevada about five miles away across the flat valley, but it's Sunday night so we didn't think punishing our bodies with five more miles would offer us to many available services. Randy had to stop a couple of times today to stretch out his sore back, so after crossing the state line he was ready to stop for the day. During his first attempt to stretch out his back he couldn't determine why he was feeling such stiffness, but when we stopped for a second stretching session a right to left rotating motion quickly reminded him that it has been a long time since he'd swung a golf club, and between last night and this morning he must have taken two hundred swings. Just as darkness started to creep in last night we began searching for a tentsite and as we stepped on to small trail leading off to a nice flat spot we couldn't believe what we found. Sitting out in the middle of nowhere was a Wilson 1200 LT Five Wood. You should have seen the boy. He was like a kid at Christmas who was just given a present he had been waiting months to receive. There were no golf balls to be found, but there was an endless supply of small stones. They don't travel nearly as far, but they sure do resonate a cool sound when they make contact with the clubhead. He felt like he was on the largest driving range in the world. Late last night and early this morning he swong and he swong, and today he is definitely feeling a bit sore. We both had another "kid at Christmas" moment when we reached the, "Welcome to Nevada" sign this evening. It's hard to believe that after today we only have one more state line between us and the west coast. We can't wait to see the Ocean, but we wish this journey could go on forever! We are very excited to see what Nevada has to offer and look forward to enjoying the "Silver State". If you would like to learn more about Nevada you should check out our States of the ADT Nevada page at: http://www.treckusa.com/smartsection+item.itemid+163.htm . As for Randy's sore back, it's all about staying in practice. He hasn't played golf in a long time so his body is paying for it. Our advice to you comes from a childhood conversation with the wise Grandma Propster. Grandma always said, "if you do a cartwheel everyday you will always be able to do a cartwheel". That was her way of saying that there is no excuse for getting old or feeling out of shape, if you want to be able to do it tomorrow the you better do it today! Makes sense to us, how about you?
