Colorado is the 10th state along our hike, and the 38th state admitted to the union in 1876. Colorado is well known as the home of the highest points of the Rocky Mountains. Colorado was named after the Spanish word "Colorado", meaning reddish colored. Colorado was once nicknamed the "Buffalo Plains State" in reference to the many bison that once roamed the Colorado Plains.

Colorado entered the Union 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence and is therefore known as the "Centennial State".
