Physiographic Provinces of Delaware
Category : Classroom Activities
Students will identify landforms found in Deleware as belonging to the Coastal Plain or the Piedmont.
Topic – Physiographic Provinces of Delaware

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to locate the major physiographic provinces on a US map.
2. Students will be able to visually identify major landforms of the state being studied by matching them to the physiographic subregion in which they are located.

Bellwork:
Students will play the “Where Am I” game for a major landform location in the state being studied. Use of pictures would be best as it will help students anticipate the skills used in this lesson.

Lesson Introduction:
Use the state in which you live to demonstrate what determines a physiographic province. In Virginia we are lucky to have a good variety. If you live in a more monotonous state, feel free to use the “Old Dominion” as your example state.

Activity One:
Use website references to identify on a US landform map the major phsiographic provinces.

Activity Two:
Determine which of these provinces are located in the state being studied. Use a state map to color and create a key with descriptions for the province(s) within the borders of this state.

Activity Three:
Develop another state map showing more detailed distinctions by locating the subregions which are present in this state.

Activity Four:
Create and play a MATCHING GAME. Construct a set of cards with pictures, names of features, and descriptions on one side and blank on the other. Create pairs of identical cards. The game is played with all cards face down, and to get points students need to not only uncover identical pictures, but also match them to the correct subregion in the map from activity three above. If the students are more advanced, you can create the cards with pictures, but lacking the written information. If Randy and Sheri have already been through a particular state, you could use pictures from the treckusa.com website.

Activity Five:
Review Quiz of either locating major provinces on US map, or locating subregions on the state map.
