The History of Powell Skateboards

Powell Skateboards is a renowned skateboard company founded in 1978 by George Powell and Stacey Peralta. George was an engineering graduate of Stanford who used to make his own skateboards in his youth. In 1974, he began to make skateboards again when his son became interested in skateboarding and told him the wheels on his old skateboards were bumpy. George began to make wheels out of urethane to solve this problem and to improve the skate. As other skateboarders saw his skateboards, George began to receive more requests for his products. His lead tester was Stacey Peralta.

In 1978, George was laid off from his job, and looking at this as an opportunity, he moved to Santa Barbara, California with Stacey and founded the Powell Peralta Company using skeletons as the corporate symbol. When Powell Peralta began selling white urethane wheels called Bones, the shop took off. Powell created its own skateboarding team called the Bones Brigade and went on to produce signature skateboards for some of the leading skateboarders of the 1980s including the Tony Hawk Iron Cross, Ray Caballero Dragon, and the McGill Cross and Snake, all team members at one time. With the hiring of graphics artist Vernon Courtland Johnson (VCJ), Powell Peralta also produced some of the leading graphics for the sport during this era.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a number of boutique skateboard companies sprang up, and skateboarders left Powell products behind for these new boards. Stacey Powell left the company in 1991 and it was renamed Powell Company. While having some difficulty selling skateboards, Powell set up Bones Bearings and continued to produce Bones wheels to skate with any board.

In the 2000s, Powell and Peralta teamed up again and produced Powell Classic skateboards for a new generation. These classic skateboards once again put Powell on the map as a leading skateboard producer. The company continues to produce both classic and contemporary boards and in 2010 folded all its companies under one banner, Powell-Peralta in California. VCJ has also returned to the fold and is working on new graphics for the company. The future of Powell-Peralta is extremely bright. If you need more information about Powell skateboards please visit the skate shop in San Clemente for expert help.
